An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates a website's identity and enables an encrypted connection using HTTPS protocol. The padlock icon in the browser address bar indicates SSL is active. SSL certificates are a basic requirement for any website — Google flags non-HTTPS sites as insecure, and browsers display warnings to users. They are also a minor ranking factor for Google.
